Revolting - 2023

Brief:

For Norwich Pride’s annual exhibition, we chose the theme queer activism history with the title ‘Revolting’. Artists have responded to this theme by looking to their queer history, community, and experiences relating to demonstrations, protests, and politics. Inspired by historic events such as Section 28, the AIDS crisis, and the marriage equality act. It also looks at recent events such as conversion therapy, ‘the trans debate’, and the increase in violent hate crimes.

My piece is in 2 parts, one side representing the experience of going to pride and what stuck out to me/stuck with me, the more happy parts you could say when the community comes together.

The other side of this piece has a more depressed tone to it, as there is also what others put into this world that makes us sad. Sometimes it’s not even other that can harm us, our brains gives us things to pick at and being queer can and will bring more negative thoughts.

What is revolution? What is activism? To me, it is just us existing to begin with. What we put out into the world is just an extension of us, and I wanted to show that in my piece. I have put my own experience into this as it does fill me with happiness to be who I am but also dread and fear sometimes. I do hope that all queer people have the happy side prevail.
